Desfasado y frívolo musical con Barbra Streisand en plan de superestrella, y con unos excelentes apartados de producción. Singular por el dinamismo de sus masivos números musicales, muestra del buen quehacer de la coreografía, los bailarines, y del instinto visual del director como coreógrafo. El resto del film carece de interés. Fue quizá la última superproducción musical realizada en Hollywood a la usanza de antaño.

An enigmatic individual -once an actor- decides to spend most of his life living among grizzly bears, filming his relationship with them and other animals to show the world their nature; as the relationships grow intimate, his expedition becomes more self confessional and dangerous. On an authentic twist, director Herzog poses his inquisitions on the animal-loving explorer, bringing us, with his sober and skeptic look, and the background of Canada’s inhospit mountain forest, a fascinating and subtle character portrayal, posing in the process educated notions about anthropocentrism and man’s relationship with his environment.

Conmovedor film inspiracional, ambientado durante la gran depresión que sufrió Estados Unidos a principios de los años treinta, y centrada en la historia verídica de un hombre que llegó a personificar las esperanzas del colectivo de la época. Como los mejores exponentes del cine de Ron Howard -y ésta es una de sus mejores-, es una película populista, cándida y optimista, bien construida, dramáticamente calculada, pero más que convincente. Russell Crowe y Paul Giamatti elevaron el aspecto humano del film con su trabajo.

Its pop sensibility barely damages the whole of its drama. Children actors helped matters significantly. An unusual film of its director.

Ambientada en la primera mitad del siglo veinte, y en los conflictos raciales de la América profunda, que la película toca lateralmente. Obra quietamente liberal, fue una sorpresiva ganadora del Oscar a la mejor película en su año.
